PROJECT SUMMARY
This project is Brisbane’s newest entertainment and lifestyle precinct, set to redefine the city’s landscape. Anchored by The Star Brisbane, the development spans the riverfront and offers a vibrant mix of dining options, nightlife, and entertainment, catering to every taste and budget. With an array of local and international retail brands and world-class accommodations, including 4-star, 5-star, and 6-star hotels, the precinct is poised to become a major attraction. Located at the edge of the CBD, the multi-billion-dollar development seamlessly integrates iconic contemporary architecture with beautifully restored heritage buildings. It also provides over 12 football fields of public space for locals and tourists to enjoy. Enhancing Brisbane’s connectivity, a new pedestrian bridge will link the CBD to South Brisbane, making the city’s dynamic offerings more accessible than ever.
Key Engineering Details
Bornhorst and Ward were instrumental in shaping the engineering solutions to the Integrated Resort Development and to the Public Realm. The IRD development consists of a basement carpark with retail, recreation and gaming floors extending seven floors above Queens Wharf Road. With five storeys of underground basement, varying ground conditions heritage listed buildings, the excavation and shoring was a unique challenge and a project in itself. B+W were able to optimise the design of various type of shoring systems including Diaphragm walls, anchored rock and concrete solder piles, whole maximising the re-use of existing basement walls.
The IRD structure consists of fourteen main floors providing large expansive floor space integrating with the existing and new public spaces. Floor systems included post tensioned concrete, precast floor planks, and over 4000 tonnes of large span steel beam shells and large span steel framed floor systems.
The public realm consists of 7.5 hectares of public space with roads, cycle paths, boardwalks, retail, landscaping, playgrounds, water feature, and stormwater treatment. B+W provided civil and structural design solutions to these public spaces which dealt with challenges including complicated staging, soft ground conditions, and the constraints of interfacing with the existing heritage buildings and public realm, including the busy Bicentennial Bikeway which remained open for the duration of the project.
